Project 2 Abstract: Multilingualism And The Ability To Shuttle Between Languages

For the second project of my English class, two classmates and I investigated multilingualism and the effects it has on the brain. To do this, we interviewed two Emory students and asked them about how multilingualism affects their academic and social lives. Furthermore, we each wrote individual essays relating to the topic of multilingualism and the brain. My analysis focused on multilingualism and the ability to shuttle between languages. Results showed that multi-linguals have more mental flexibility to do this. Also, research showed that when one is focusing in a target language at a given moment, the non-target language is also activated, even if one is not thinking or using that other language.
