Project 1 Abstract: English And Its Reinforcement Of Racial Inequality
For this project, I examined two different texts, Suthanie Motha’s Race, Empire, And English Language Teaching, and Vershawn Ashanti Young’s Should Writers Use They Own English, to see how the teachings of English can create racial discrimination. I begin by showing how each author describes the spread and the impact of English. Both writers address the issue of how English can create racial injustices and both want to educate students on alleviating this. Young and Motha have similar arguments, however I use Young’s text to forward what Motha is implying. He does this by writing his article in Black English. Overall, my essay attempts to show the different ways Young’s ideas complement and extends those of Motha’s.
